Whatever happened on that day at the Jordan river when Jesus was baptized by John, Matthew’s story, one that he shares in common with Mark (1:9-11) and Luke (3:21-22) and John (1:29-34) emphasizes the uniqueness of the baptismal candidate, i.e. Jesus.
